Gilbert Stuart
1755–1828

Stuart trained first with Cosmo Alexander in Newport and then with Benjamin West in London. The Skater established his reputation in 1782. After working in Dublin, he returned to America in 1793. Washington's 1795–1796 sittings established his principal presidential portrait types.
