John Frederick Kensett

Kensett learned engraving in his father's business and worked on banknotes before turning to landscape. He spent seven years in Europe during the 1840s studying older masters. He helped organize the 1864 Metropolitan Fair and cofounded the Metropolitan Museum in 1870.
