Jules Bastien-Lepage
1848–1884

Bastien-Lepage grew up in a modest farming family in Damvillers and trained with Alexandre Cabanel. After unsuccessful Prix de Rome attempts, he developed rural subjects from his home region. His portrait clients also included Sarah Bernhardt, Léon Gambetta and other public figures.
