Ma Yuan

Ma Yuan belonged to the fourth generation of a family of painters. He served in the Southern Song academy in Hangzhou. In his landscapes, a bank, tree or a few figures often occupy a small part of the surface. Broad unpainted areas suggest water, mist and distance, giving open space a structural role.
