Nicolas Poussin
1594–1665

Born in France, Poussin spent most of his career in Rome, working for educated patrons interested in Christianity and Stoic philosophy. Ancient sculpture informed his compositions. He also arranged wax figures in a miniature theater to plan complex scenes.
