Sakai Hōitsu

Sakai Hoitsu grew up in a wealthy samurai family and received a broad education. He became a Buddhist monk in 1797. His plant paintings combine knowledge of pictorial traditions with attention to seasonal change. On Persimmon Tree he used a seal bearing his monastic name Monsen Kishin, linking the work with that period of his life.
