1823–1880

Raised in the Hudson Valley, Gifford sketched the Catskills, Adirondacks and Shawangunk Mountains. He traveled widely in Europe and joined Ferdinand Hayden's geological survey in Wyoming in 1870. Later visits to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska extended his landscape subjects.
