Unidentified Roman painters

Unidentified painters made the Villa of the Mysteries frescoes in the first century BCE. Large figures occupy the room's walls and relate to Dionysus and his companions. Scholars differ in reconstructing the ritual sequence. The surviving ensemble connects domestic space, religious subjects and the work of Roman painters.
