Bogdanov-Belsky began his own education in a village school and later painted many peasant children. In this 1897 picture a boy stands at the door while others study. The Russian Museum suggests a connection with the artist’s memories, though no particular incident has been established.

The boy has removed his cap and holds it in front of him. He faces the classroom with his back to us. With his face largely hidden, the position of his hands and head becomes particularly noticeable.

A light bundle hangs over his shoulder. Together with the stick it suggests a journey or belongings carried on the road. The artist leaves the rest of the story open.

Bast shoes and leg wrappings are carefully painted beside the worn clothes. These objects locate the boy in a rural setting.

Pupils bend over a long table in the distance. Their small figures and repeated heads make the distance from the doorway to the classroom tangible.

A board stands by the wall behind the table. The lesson is already under way, while the boy remains between the passage and the brighter room.

A lamp hangs beneath the beams. The low ceiling and wooden walls show the school’s modest setting, an ordinary rural room adapted for teaching.

The artist associated the village’s prospects with education. His school pictures give individual children a distinct place and character. Bogdanov-Belsky’s biography helps explain why he returned to the subject for decades.
