Rouen Cathedral, West Façade, Sunlight

In 1892 and 1893 Monet worked on more than thirty cathedral views, switching canvases as the light changed. He finished them in Giverny. From a distance, colored patches form stone architecture; up close, the building separates into dense brushstrokes that reveal its painted construction.

A tall pointed doorway anchors the lower facade. Its dark depth remains visible among the light color patches.

A circular window emerges in pale paint. Monet retains its recognizable shape without drawing every detail equally sharply.

A narrow tower climbs beyond the canvas edge. The cropped architecture increases the sense of proximity to the huge facade.

A blue strip of sky remains at the side. Its color separates the stone's outer contour from the air.

Small dark marks below suggest people. Their size gives a measure of the building despite its freely painted surface.

The date 1894 belongs to the series' completion in the studio. The painting combines observations made under changing light with later revision. Enlarging it reveals how layered areas of paint reconstruct the view.
