Emperor Huizong
1082–1135
The eighth emperor of the Song dynasty was a painter and patron of the court academy. Under Huizong, artists studied plants and the behaviour of birds closely. Paintings were expected to combine precise observation with a sense of life in characteristic movement. They connected the ruler's taste with the court's cultural ambitions.
