Joseph Mallord William Turner

1775–1851

Turner's father, a London barber, encouraged his early interest in drawing. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1789, toured Britain and studied watercolor with Thomas Girtin. He later became an academician and served as professor of perspective from 1807 to 1837.
