Ni Zan painted landscapes with sparse, dry brushwork and broad areas of unmarked paper. His restrained manner developed during troubled times. Between 1356 and 1366 his family lived as refugees southwest of Suzhou. Inscriptions connect individual views with friendships, losses and particular recipients.
