Wind among the Trees on the Riverbank — Ni Zan
Bequest of John M. Crawford Jr., 1988 · The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Ni Zan painted this for the scholar-artist Yu Kan in 1363, during displacement and in the year his wife died. Sparse forms and an inscription may register isolation. Biography informs the view without assigning a single meaning to every empty area.

Thin trees rise from the rocky near bank. The small group occupies only part of the open surface.

Rounded rocks gather beneath the trunks. A few forms suffice to establish solid ground.

A small mountain appears across the water. Its remoteness depends on the nearly unpainted interval.

A low distant bank extends to the right. A thin line continues space without extensive detail.

An inscription stands beside the trees. It preserves the landscape’s connection with its recipient and personal circumstances.

Broad blank water separates the spatial layers. Distance becomes visible through the absence of dense painting.

From 1356 to 1366 Ni Zan lived displaced with his family southwest of Suzhou. A gift to another scholar places the painting within personal relationships maintained despite the loss of a stable home.
