Raphael
1483–1520

Raphael grew up in Urbino, the son of the court painter Giovanni Santi. In 1508 Pope Julius II summoned him to Rome to paint the papal apartments. His responsibilities expanded rapidly. In 1514 he succeeded Bramante as architect of St Peter's, combining painting with the direction of major building work.
